Course Description

FACT: One in every twenty preschoolers today will commit a serious crime in adulthood.
FACT: Twenty-five percent of children today have a behavior problem.
FACT: If not intervened with in the early years, 80% of those children identified as having behavior problems in childhood will continue to have behavior problems throughout their life.

Pretty scary, huh? You can do something about it! Learn how to discipline and take charge once again.

This course is taught by a PhD level, licensed Pediatric Behavioral Specialist with over 25 years experience working with parents, school districts and professionals in understanding and correcting problem behavior. In this course you will:

  • Learn to identify types of behavior problems and potential causes.
  • Gain understanding about factors that influence problem behavior that are in the environment, society, and culture.
  • Learn a strategic approach to targeting problem behaviors such as biting, stealing, lying, hitting, and more.
  • Write an effective behavior management plan that is specific to your needs. 
  • Learn hundreds of "tricks of the trade" -- strategies that have been around for years and new strategies based on a brain-based approach.
In addition, this course allows you to:
  • Work at your own pace.
  • Get individualized help from the instructor.
  • Retake quizzes until you have mastered the material.
  • Earn certificate or continuing education credit (CEU) for license renewal.
You need not have a college education, or even a high school education to take the course. The course was designed to be user friendly and easy to read. It was designed for parents, educators, teachers, social workers, behavior management personnel, child care providers, and anyone who works with children.

Behavioral Health Counseling with Instructor Catherine Swanson Cain is an online counseling course with a behavioral health expert who has worked with young children and their families on behavioral/emotional/and relationship issues for 25 years. If you have a behavioral problem, are having trouble with discipline, or want advise on how to successfully work with disorders such as PDD, Autism, Oppositional Defiance Disorder, ADHD, Attachment Disorder, or Conduct Disorder, this course is for you.

This course requires no previous education or experience, and is open to parents, foster parents, child care providers, teachers, and others who work with young children with behavioral health issues. Coursework will consist of a number of central lessons, quizzes, assignments, class polls, and netlinks . This course will be based on a 100 pt. grading scale, and the Instructor's specific grading policy will be presented in the class syllabus. For students who strive for course completion or other documentation might achieve several offered certificates based on academic performance, attendance and participation .

Instructor Catherine Swanson Cain has a Ph.D. Education, specializing in Early Childhood Education, Special Education, and Administration who has over twenty years of experience in working in the field of early childhood/special education. Instructor Catherine Swanson Cain is also currently teaching The Amazing Brain: How & Why It is Connected to Behavior, From Cradle to Crime: When Things Go Wrong During the Attachment Years, and Behavior Management: When Time-Out & Stickers Don't Work


This course offers 1.0 CEUs upon successful completion. You may take this online course with or without CEU documentation. Course Lessons

  1. Lesson 1: Understanding Behavior - Lesson 1 covers information about the development of behavior and the many factors associated with behavior problems.
  2. Lesson 2: Sources of Behavior Problems - Learn the many factors associated with problem behavior, including those associated with societal practices and culture.
  3. Lesson 3: Controlling the Environment - One of the most effective way of correcting behavior is to work on the environment. This lesson covers ways to correct factors in the environment that may be related to misbehavior and introduces you to the concept of attachment and the trust cycle.
  4. Lesson 4: The Behavior Plan - Lesson 4 teaches you have to create and implement an effective behavior plan to tackle the problem behavior. This is the same strategy that I use in my profession.
  5. Lesson 5: The Brain's Response - Lesson 5 gives you insight into what is happening in the brain in relation to how a child behaves.
  6. Lesson 6: Finally... Strategies! - Finally! You get to start applying some time-tested strategies that are not only helpful for children with behavior problems, but all children.
  7. Lesson 7: Systematic Planning - You wouldn't set out on a journey without having a map and plan in mind. The same is true for correcting behavior. Learn an effective means of targeting and intervening with behavior.
  8. Lesson 8: Changing Behavior - Put the strategic planning into place using a behavior plan you will write to address the problem behavior in a child.
  9. Lesson 9: Specific Strategies - Lessons 9 and 10 are full of specific strategies you can use as tools in addressing problem behavior.
  10. Lesson 10: My Bag of Tricks - Lesson 10 contains tricks of the trade that I have developed over the years. You may want to incorporate some of them into your behavior plan.
